a swing band used to play a style of music that was
predominantly enjoyed by ‘mature’ enthusiasts
of the great Rat Pack entertainers. Frank
Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr all
made the swing music popular. They were the epitome
of style, class and cool. The music was also made
popular by great singers like Tony Bennett,
Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. There
was also the Glen Miller Orchestra, Duke Ellington,
Benny Goodman and Count Basie and hundreds
of well loved British and American big bands. However,
more recently this specialist theme music has been
put firmly back on the map where it belongs. The huge
success of Jamie Cullum, Jools Holland, Harry
Connick Jr, Rod Stewart, Norah Jones, Westlife, Robbie
Williams and many more, has dramatically
increased the popularity of the big swing band sound
once again. There have also been a large number of
theatre tours featuring the Rat Pack trios and these
have played to packed houses up and down the country.
The hugely popular prime-time UK BBC 1 series
Strictly Come Dancing has meant that the
live Big Band and Swing Band music
is deservedly back with a bang. This great jazz music
style is undoubtedly loved by young and old alike!
